Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest particular decisions from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
