Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests suggest the fluid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet informed of any injuries in association with the event," they commented.
Local authorities said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
A senior official stated the attack rendered him speechless and had to be solved rapidly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
