Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
