EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
